About Me

Something no-one could easily guess - I was born in Burma. A lifetime away but still I have memories - most notably running away from school.

After university, I spent years on the road shooting films on a vast range of subjects. Even so, I’m as excited as I ever was about the drama of video and photography. That’s why I’m still working, experimenting and refining what I already know. In my spare time, I play the saxophone, or pick up my camera to shoot sunsets!

My career

I’ve made over 70 films ( commissioned by the BBC, Thames, Yorkshire TV, Channel 4, and Arte) Sometimes I had the good luck to be in places of stunning beauty: most notably when I was asked to do a film about the Raj Palaces in India. However, more often the locations were a little less hospitable. I was embedded with the Kurds, filmed in Somalia and Israel, Russia, China and South East Asia as well as Europe and the United States. Sometimes filming took me in surprising directions - sky diving and caving! Oh and I spent several years specialising in riots and protest movements - exhausting! I won awards - specifically Best European Political Documentary and the Wincott Award as business journalist of the year for TV..

When I first started in television, we still shot on film. So I worked as a director with an army of people on the shoot. However, I grabbed the change to start shooting my own material as soon as it became a possibility. With Margharita, who later became my wife, I was one of the earliest self-crewing teams. I loved the excitement of not just directing a scene or film but actually physically running with a story, putting down on tape the events unfolding in front of my eyes.

Today.

For the rest of my working life, I want to celebrate the beauty of nature and life
