About Me
Photographer - Ty Philips
Ty’s interest in photography started early and evolved quite naturally, growing up in Beautiful British Columbia [BC’s former License plate motto]—A picturesque environment where there were always many great Photo Op’s; Weddings, family gatherings and unique events like the World’s Fair—Expo‘86 provided plenty of opportunities to ‘point & shoot’. “I got my first real camera for my 8th birthday. It was a Kodak Instamatic 110. I still remember the box it came in. I took that camera with me everywhere. Of course I didn’t understood the medium very well, but knew I liked taking pictures and it wasn’t long before I realized I wanted to take better ones! So photography became somewhat of a pass-time and although I didn’t possess the skills I have today, I had found something of great interest to me and was eager to learn how to be more creative and how to make good pictures look great. I took my share of pictures growing up but it wasn’t until after graduation that I started taking photography more seriously. I received a Pentax K-1000 as a gift from a friend and immediately enrolled in classes at a photography school and started working on several projects. While honing my technical skills and learning more about color, light, composition and atmosphere, I also began experimenting with the balance between the aesthetic and practical aspects of photography using what new knowledge I had gained to influence my approach. It was during that time that I started to gain a much greater understanding of my visual experience of photography and what it was about the medium that intrigued me so much: The objective and subjective context of photographic subjects and the respective values of each; the balance between documentary and personal expression in still images; the relationships among form, function, style and emotion and ultimately, the collision of science & art.” After a couple of years at university, Ty wound up apprenticing to become a Pro- fessional Picture Framer at a local art gallery—Designer Frameffects Inc. During this time he enjoyed working with several artists and photographers and found certain inspiration in their work which compelled him to find his own voice and to explore his own creative ideas and talent working in the photographic medium. He traveled to many wonderful places including China & Hong Kong, Thailand, New York, Los Angeles, Miami & Detroit, the Caribbean & the D.R. as well as across Europe—never without his trusted SLR camera! Ty’s career has taken many turns since those days at the gallery. He has worked as an actor, model, camera assistant, boom operator, DP, Director and Radio Host but has found his skills primarily as a photographer to be one of the most valuable assets while approaching his varied work. “It always comes back to photography. I like to look at things through an imaginary Lens—even when I’m not taking pictures—to consider a different, less obvious perspective. Invariably I find that if I take the time to do this, I discover things I would have likely missed or plainly overlooked and these are often the very details that capture my interest and inspire my work.” ____________ Ty has lived & worked around the globe and currently resides in Vancouver, CANADA. He's a self-proclaimed New Millennium Entrepreneur and works as a freelance Photographer, Voice Over artist and Marketer. He is designing a coffee table book of his work.
