Erin Brady, Miss Connecticut, crowned Miss USA 2013

Erin Brady, or Miss Connecticut, won the 2013 Miss USA crown. 25-year old Brady, a finance major from Central Connecticut State University, works as an accountant but will be giving that up for her new role as Miss USA.

Miss Utah’s Marissa Powell managed to steal some of the morning headlines after her unfortunate attempt to answer a question on income inequality.

Ana Braga in Playboy Brazil

We want to congratulate Model Mayhem’s Ana Braga on her recent 10-page feature in Playboy Brazil. After being published in Playboy Romania a while back, many doors have been opening for her, especially in the Playboy family! Model Mayhem’s Leah Jung recently landed the cover of Tatowier Magazin. It’s Germany’s oldest tattoo magazine. Leah has been published in numerous other magazines. She is becoming more and more well known internationally as an alternative model. We believe that she will continue to do well and we look forward to seeing more of her published work.

Model Mayhem’s Irina Ansell is published in Koncept Magazine this month. She stated that it was a very fun shoot with Gilbert which combined glamour and fashion. Irina has been working hard over the last few months. Her star is rising and it’s great to see!

MM’s Jen on the runways at 47

When most people think of runway models, they usually think of girls aged 15-20 doing fashion shows. However, Model Mayhem’s Jen is living proof that it doesn’t have to be that way. She just turned 47 and has been shooting since last February. At 46, while living in Alaska, she was able to walk in a Couture show at the Jimmy Crystal Showroom in NYC. She credits the fact that she is on Model Mayhem and designer Danny Nguyen for the opportunity. Jen also added that she has two very large tattoos which did not stop her from taking advantage of this big break. You can watch some of the show on YouTube.

Kate Upton’s photo before fame

Ever wondered what Kate Upton looked like before she became super famous? This article in The Inquistr shows a photo of Kate before she entered superstardom. Prior to becoming famous, she was just another young girl working hard at trying to make it in the industry. Although her earlier photos showed potential, it wasn’t until much later that she gained fame. In fact, some people did not think that she was agency model material. However, one agent believed in her and took the time to properly market her image.

She is one of the most widely published alternative models in the industry although many of her photos have been featured in mainstream publications and campaigns. We look forward to seeing more of her work in the future.

Carmilla Jo in Gothesque magazine

Carmilla Jo is featured in the June edition of Gothesque magazine. In fact, this is the first issue of the magazine. Here’s what Carmilla said on her blog about being published: “I’m so proud and honored to be included in this issue. Back at the end of April, I worked with Yellow Bubbles Photography and Spoiled Cherry Designs on an underwater shoot. I love modelling underwater.”

Model Mayhem’s Ana Braga recently got a 12-page pictorial layout in the Italian edition of FIGHT! Magazine. She stated that she is “stoked!” to be featured. Ana has been published in a huge variety of magazines over the past year. Her popularity as a stunning blonde glamour model is growing internationally. Ana is doing very well and she will continue to do so!

If you’re looking to get your body bikini ready, then a Sports Illustrated swimsuit model is someone worth listening to. This Hollywood Life article reveals tips from Nina Agdal on how to get your bikini body. She also reveals some of her beauty tips and other information on how to look and feel fantastic. First, she recommends highly intense yet short workouts. She also stated that she does not overuse cosmetics on her face and likes to keep her skin care regimen fairly natural.

Ashley Alexiss in American Curves Magazine

Model Mayhem’s Ashley Alexiss is having a very successful career as an international glamour and lingerie model. She has an 8-page feature in the summer edition of American Curves Magazine. American Curves is very popular among the male audience and many glamour models have had major boosts to their careers after being published in it. She had a 7-page non-nude spread in Playboy South Africa in October as their first ever Girl Next Door. She’s also been published digitally and in print with Playboy a few times and all have been non-nude features. Ashley is the only Playboy model who did not have to be nude to be published in the magazine. She also holds the title of Playboy’s first blonde Miss Social (Feb. 2011).

Cindy Crawford’s escape from kidnapper

When people are talking about models getting kidnapped, most only think that it happens to naive aspiring models who are completely new to the industry. However, in this Daily Mail article, Cindy Crawford tells her own story about the time that she escaped from a kidnapper’s car at an airport in Paris.  The man who picked her up at the airport tricked her into getting into his car. What’s even scarier is that at the time this happened, she was already a highly successful model in her 20′s. This proves that it can happen to everyone. Luckily for her, she got away.

Celebrity photographer Markus Klinko, who is known for his iconic images of Hollywood’s hottest stars, working alongside his partner Indrani, is now sharing his knowledge and techniques with photographers of all levels. The premiere event will take place on July 13th at Smashbox Studios in Los Angeles. This event will feature some of the top agency models as well as celebrity hair, make-up and styling teams.

Although this is not her first time getting published, Model Mayhem’s Paige Morgan stated that she is really proud of the shoot which landed her six pages in Giuseppina Magazine #13. Paige’s collaboration with talented designer/wig maker/photographer Kathleen Marie, who is also a Model Mayhem member, resulted in some fantastic images for the magazine. Paige is an experienced model who enjoys shooting everything from edgy fashion, runway, hair/beauty to alternative, commercial and portraiture.

Trek for Teens Fashion Gala

And finally, Cat Solomon, a Toronto based freelance model, was selected as one of the featured models in the Trek for Teens Fashion Gala on June 2, 2013. The event showcases designers and models to help raise funds and awareness for homeless youth in the Toronto area. The gala includes fashion, alongside many talented musical acts and dance crews, with an auction and raffle of some great prizes. We can’t think of a better reason to see Cat in action while enjoying a night of fashion, music and dance.

Look for former and current traveling models; contact as many as possible to get generalized advice. Please note that it is not recommended to contact established models to ask for a list of clients who pay, unless you are offering a list of clients in return.

Don’t assume people are going to host you

First and foremost, do not assume, or expect others to be willing and able to host you, especially if you do not have a wealth of good references. You can build good character references by working with people locally. Overtime, if you maintain good standing in your local market, it will be easier to branch out. Consider hosting other travelers who have good references. When I had an apartment, I hosted and shot with a good number of travelers, and this way I was able to already know a few people in other markets.

You may want to cover your own lodgings, at first

Also, with a few exceptions, I planned to visit new markets and cover my own lodging, booking as many test shoots with those established in that market as possible. You may experience a bit of a monetary loss, but in the long run this can be a very effective way to test a new market out and hopefully make more contacts.

Plan ahead, and be courteous

If you are contacting someone in regards to possible hosting, be as courteous and detailed as possible. A one-liner cold-call message saying, “Hey, do you host?” is generally not received well. Likewise, a frantic forum post asking for last-minute hosting generally does not get a good response. Plan ahead. Here is a basic example of a good message to send:

“Hello Photographer Sergio,

I was considering traveling to Boondock sometime in late April, and was wondering if you would be available and interested in hosting me. Model Sindy is a friend of mine and said that you were a wonderful host this past summer. I noticed that you are working on a project that I may be applicable for, and would be more than willing to trade modeling time for that project for hosting if you found that to be a fair barter. Other people that have hosted me are Painter Sven in Hocus and Photographer Arianna in Pocus this past fall.

Be considerate— Try to minimize the “weight” you put on your host

Secondly, be considerate of those hosting you. Be mindful of others’ work schedules and your utility usage, and don’t make a mess. If you are being hosted in an area where there is not reliable public transportation and you do not have your own vehicle, do not rely on your host to drive you around. I do not drive, and in the past I find it helpful to negotiate a lower half day or full day rate with anyone in the area that will be hiring me if they can provide transportation to and from my host’s house.

When possible, especially for longer stays with people, it is a good idea to have a “community” night—offer to buy groceries and cook a meal, and catch up with those hosting you, especially if you both have hectic schedules and do not see each other regularly. If there are dishes, do them. If the trash needs to be taken out, take it out. It is also good practice to leave a hand-made or store-bought thank you card or gift. Make every effort to be someone that one would like hosting again.

Be sure to meet your host’s expectations on the agreement

Third, follow up on whatever barter arrangements you have made with your host. Make sure all involved are clear on what the arrangements are. I find it good practice to set aside a day or half day of shooting time and treat shooting with a host as any other paid job. This ensures I will not overbook and not leave time for following up on my end of the bargain. If there is spare time where you both are free to shoot, you can consider it an added bonus.

Prepare for the worst—plans may not follow through

Lastly, always prepare for the worst. Sometimes personalities clash or a host has to go out of town, or whatever other situation may arise that would prevent you from staying with a planned host. It is a good idea to know others in the area who could take you in for a night or two, but do not rely on this. Set aside an emergency savings, and know where cheap and safe lodging are in the area. I personally do not use sites like couchsurfing.org or airbnb.com, but those are good sites to find alternate ways to stay in a city without paying for a hotel. Craigslist.org is also a good source in some areas, provided you are savvy to Craigslist lingo. Worst case, have enough in an emergency savings to cover travel home.

I’m about 5’6 and want to work in fashion. How do I get signed by an agency?

This is one of the most common recurring forum topics on Model Mayhem, and the simple answer to the question is this…

If you are under 5’8″, above a size 4 dress, or over the age of 20, your chances of getting signed by a major market high fashion/runway agency is as likely as winning the lottery and getting attacked by a gang of ninjas in the same 24 hour period.

Clothing samples are made to a uniform smaller size to save money (each couture gown can cost in the tens of thousands) and slimmer bodies are less of a distraction from the cut and drape of the clothes, letting them hang in the precise shape the designer had cut on the dress form. Essentially, the clothes are not made to fit the models—the agencies sign models that will fit into the clothes.

As far as high fashion’s focus on the extremely young, it takes several years to build a model into a working, bookable name, so agents prefer new faces, in the 14-16 range. Also, fashion trends and needs change extremely quickly, and your average editorial/runway model is near the end of her career by 23, unless she has become an extremely well known super model.  Many girls also leave the industry due to a lack of booking in a sea of beautiful new faces, or from sheer burnout from constant travel, work and rejection.

What about Kate Moss/Devon Aoki/Marilyn Monroe/Lady Gaga?

Insert your choice of rare short model or shorter celebrity that has done modeling/advertising work. Essentially the answer is the same…

Kate Moss was signed exceptionally young in the hopes that she would grow, because she had such a one in a million look. Several influential people carefully boosted and maintained her career, and she was friends with a genius designer (John Galliano), who was also a rapidly rising star.

Devon Aoki is the child of millionaire restaurant mogul Rocky Aoki (founder of Benihana) and she has an extremely singular, exotic look.

Marilyn Monroe did indeed model, but not for high fashion, and her pin up and cheesecake modeling work was the equivalent of modern glamour modeling, where curvier bodies are the norm.

Lady Gaga has appeared in shows for both Alexander McQueen and Mugler, but this is due to her immense fame as a singer. Popular actresses/singers are often asked to appear in runway shows, ad campaigns or on magazine covers, due to their fame.

There are always a few cases in each generation who get signed in spite of being too tall/too short/curvy/older than usual/noticeably tattooed.

If you happen to have influential, major market bookers interested in you, very talented/famous friends, a wealthy father with a plethora of connections, or a multi platinum recording career, you very well could be the next exception to the rule. Without those mitigating circumstances, it is extremely unlikely. As most of Model Mayhem members does not have that sort of access, it is unwise to rely on exceptional circumstances as a given.

What about Plus Modeling?

Again, plus modeling is much the same as “straight” size modeling.

If you are 5’9″ or taller, a size 10-14 (though some plus divisions will also book size 16-18 on occasion, but the majority of the work is in the 10-14 size group, depending on the market) and have a gorgeous face and very even proportions, give the agencies with plus divisions a try. However, plus modeling isn’t a catch all for all of us whom don’t fit the fashion mold, and has equally stringent standards of its own.

Can’t shorter girls get signed by commercial agencies, as that is different from fashion work?

Commercial agencies and those in smaller markets are a touch more forgiving, but the minimum cut off is generally 5’6/5’7 and you better have one gorgeous book of commercial images.

Unlike fashion agencies, where one can get signed with just Polaroids, commercial agencies want to see that you can already produce images that would be a good fit for their clients. Even then you’ll be battling uphill with all of the taller girls who can work in either fashion or commercial, or have aged out of fashion and have gotten signed by commercial agencies to continue working.

On the plus side, commercial models have a much longer shelf life than editorial models, as advertisements and catalogs need a wider age range to reflect their target markets.

Promotional and talent agencies count, don’t they?

Promotional modeling has very little to do with fashion or commercial modeling. Generally, promotional models are hired to help get the word out for a brand or a product via passing out samples/flyers, informing potential customers about the product or service at events and trade shows and other duties more akin to customer service and advertising directly.

Talent agencies will occasionally book modeling work for those they sign (clients do need specific skill sets for print and advertising work), but you still have to have an established talent (acting/voiceover, dance, music) to be marketable to the clients looking for both skills and modeling experience.

So what kind of modeling CAN I do? I’m beautiful too! Why can’t I model?

For all the ladies who do not fit those molds: IT IS NOT THE END OF THE WORLD. It also does not mean you aren’t beautiful or that you can’t model—just that you aren’t cut out for fashion. The majority of modeling isn’t high fashion, and there are plenty of other options.

Rather than beat your head against the wall and pout over your lack of height/sample size measurements/extreme youth (or, even worse, fruitlessly crusade to “change the industry”), here are the questions you should be asking yourself:

1. What genres and content am I comfortable shooting?
2. Is my end goal to model full time/as a sole source of income? As a side job? Or just for fun?
3. What are my strong features/points? What genres/markets value those features/body types?

Depending on your body type, and the answers to those questions, you have a plethora of other options. Fit modeling, parts, fitness, glamour, alt, hair/beauty, pin up, fetish and art nudes (if you are over 18 and comfortable shooting either); there are many choices.

Identify the genres that DO work for you, instead of being frustrated by the ones that don’t, and you’ll probably accomplish more and have a lot more fun, maybe even make some extra cash. Plus, the forum posters won’t descend on you in a hail of snarkiness and irritation, which is a nice bonus.

In her profile, she states that she loves alternative fashion and we can see that her images definitely show it. Throughout her career, Ash has worked with several companies that cater to the alternative lifestyle in addition to appearing on covers of magazines such as Tattoo Life and Bizarre. Christian Saint recently photographed Alloy Ash for the cover of Tattoo Venus, which is a 100-page magazine featuring his images of beautiful tattooed models without any ads or articles. Some of the other models featured in Tattoo Venus include: Vikki Blows, Hattie Watson, Amelia Nightmare, Amina Munster, Anne Lindfjeld, Azarja Van Der Veen, Levy Tran, Micheline Pitt, Leah Jung, Radeo, Chasidey Lee Del Balso, Betty Lipstick, El Wood, Kristen Leanne, Jesse Lee Denning and Vanessa Lake.

MM’s Keely founds non-profit organization

Model Mayhem’s Keely, also known as GooodGracious, founded a non-profit organization called Survivor Glam Squad. The primary purpose of this organization is to provide professional makeovers and photo shoots to female cancer survivors. Keely and her team of photographers, stylists, designers and other industry talent help boost self esteem, provide education and motivation for female cancer patients and survivors. The Survivor Glam Squad helps women learn how to feel normal and beautiful again and it gives them the opportunity to meet others in similar situations. One of Model Mayhem’s top photographers, Anthony Neste, is a huge supporter of the organization and has donated a lot of his time in support of the Survivor Glam Squad. Keely and her team are in process of organizing several fundraising events throughout the United States.

Masuimi Max launches her own makeup line

Masuimi Max has launched her own makeup line, I Am Sin. The new website, which was designed by Masuimi, has video tutorials from makeup artists and featured models that use I Am Sin.

All the products are cruelty free and made in the USA, and on top of that, makeup artists, models and students receive 10% off. You can join Masuimi for the official launch on May 31 at the Pinup Girl Boutique.

Leah Jung lands a major commercial gig

Model Mayhem’s Leah Jung stars in the brand new commercial for Evian Water. Although the commercial was only released a few weeks ago it has garnered over 40 million views to date on YouTube. In addition to her acting and dancing work, Leah has had hundreds of features in various magazines, including some covers. She has a phenomenal portfolio and a very impressive list of credits.

Sarah Starr featured in Glam Jam

Sarah Starr has extensive experience as a model. Recently, the South Carolina-based beauty scored an 8-page feature in Glam Jam Magazine. However, this is far from her first time getting published. Sarah also had the cover of FemmeXposure Magazine, in addition to an 18-page pictorial. Some of the other publications that Sarah has been in include: Wordwide Fearless Magazine, TOUCH Magazine, Southern Vixens Magazine and many more. She has also been featured on numerous websites.

Model Mayhem’s Shelly d’Inferno is on the cover of Skin Deep Magazine (Issue 221). This is Shelly’s second appearance in the MM Modeling News Roundup. Earlier this year, she was featured in MM Modeling News Roundup for her awesome cover of Bizarre Magazine. Not only is Shelly a great model, but she is also a talented make-up artist, stylist and clothing designer. Working with her would be like working with an entire team of creative individuals. Victoria’s Secret model quits

While most aspiring models dream of becoming a Victoria’s Secret model and living what is deemed to be a glamorous life, Kylie Bisutti quit. According to this US Magazine article, she did not like being marketed as an object of desire to male audiences, which is her primary reason for quitting. Kylie, when she first started modeling, only wanted to be a fashion model. She did not like to shoot lingerie and implied nudes. Most girls would fight extremely hard to be in her coveted position.
