Model Mayhem’s March 2013 cover photo comes from Stephen Thorne. Stephen is an accomplished photojournalist with numerous awards to his name. His photography has been featured in many newspapers and magazines, including Time, Weekly World News, and the International Journal. Stephen was recently named Model Mayhem 2012 Photographer of the Year, an award voted on by MM members.

We asked Stephen about the four portraits he selected: “I love shooting faces, especially by natural light. These four models — Caitlin Clemmens, Raliat M, Lili Tee and Alina Lapteva — have great faces. Beautiful, yes, but more than that, each of them is an outstanding talent who can summon a mood, an emotion or an expression on cue. I don’t know why my portraits often seem so melancholy. I guess what I look for in the eyes and faces of the models I shoot is a piece of myself and my own experiences in life and as a journalist. Life can be hard and it’s when grace and beauty emerge through that hardness and difficulty that I appreciate them most.”
