Steven Bagley is a New York based photographer specializing in photographing women using natural light. He recently won the Bronze Medal, as voted for by members, in the Model Mayhem Photographer of the Year contest.

How long have you been a photographer?

Since I was in High School, but not at this level. My current work on Model Mayhem is only since 2009.

What genres of photography do you most enjoy?

I love Portraits, Lifestyle, Commercial, Lingerie, Fashion, and Editorial Shoots. I don’t really have a specific type of shoot that I like more than another; it really depends on the model’s looks. That determines what and how I’ll shoot her.

Do you have any favorite shoots?

I’ll be honest. I do have a few favorite shoots I’ve done, however, it wouldn’t be fair to name the shoot as I’d be disrespecting all the other models I’ve shot with. And that’s because I have so much fun while shooting. I’ve really been blessed.

If you could shoot anyone, who would you choose?

Here in New York, high on my list to photograph is, Tatiana Likhina, a gorgeous young model whose look and beauty is timeless. However, I guess if I was given the opportunity to work with ANY model right now, Donna Feldman, would be at the top of my list, along with Kate Upton with her natural curves. I’d love to shoot those two in the fashions by the Russian designer, Oleysia Malinskaya… Fly them over to Moscow and St. Petersburg. Those would be my “Dream Shoots,” and I if dream it, it will happen. LOL.

Who or what inspires or influences your work?

Although, my style is different than his, Helmut Newton is my biggest idol, along with Ansel Adams. Very different, for sure, but, I really love their work.

What are you goals for 2013?

This year I hope will top last year, more than being the Bronze Medalist for Photographer of the Year, I want to take a “Quantum Leap” in both the quality and styling of my shoots. I haven’t just yet found the Wardrobe Stylist that wants to work with me and shares the same vision. But, I can’t give up! There’s a stylist somewhere out there just for me!

As for 2013, this year will see me in shooting in Russia or Poland. Not quite sure which will turn out to be the easiest to organize and pay for, but I’m going to one or the other.

And, what does it mean to you to be named one of our photographer’s of the year?

Finally, I want to thank Model Mayhem and all the members that voted me. It’s such an honor and something I will treasure for years to come.
