ZEITGEIST PHOTOGRAPHY

What is it that creates a ‘zeitgeist’? What is it that makes a picture or a television show look like it’s from “the 40s” or “the 60s” or “the 80s”? What is it that “infuses” us to think in those blocks of ten years? That’s what I am endeavoring to capture with each photograph I take. I’m not creating any sorts of trends or aesthetics. I’m merely reflecting back for a split second (or for 1/125th of a second) what the spirit of the age reveals; holding up a mirror to ourselves, so that we can see what we were at that instant. I look forward to looking back on these images one day and getting the feeling that I get when I watch Bullitt or The Big Sleep; or something even older. Wow, things were different then. Remember how everybody used to wear these and think they were really cool? I want to get that feeling. Hopefully, I’ll help other people get that feeling too.
But more about that spirit that you capture, the “spirit of the age”,  the zeitgeist. You capture an infinitesimal fraction of that spirit. You capture it in your ‘magic box’ and then you paper the world with it. I’m tapping into that zeitgeist, if you think about it in terms of evoking spirits, or a kind of invocation if you will. I’m poking holes in the fabric of time and taking pictures of what squirts through; the time ghost, the time spirit. Chronos, Chronos is his name. But Chronos eats his children…
