I'm trying to put together a list of all the major and independent fashion and beauty magazines (including select online zines) currently published. If others are interested in helping compile this list through this post, it can exist as a resource for anyone who uses Model Mayhem. I will try to update the list as people add new titles and repost.

Please try to:
1) name the magazine (and/or online site if internet only),
2) the country in which it is published or if it is online,
3) the website, if you know of one (usually listed in the masthead),

If you only know the magazine's name, list that or maybe help fill in the gaps or fix a mistake.

Please don't list pop culture, celebrity, etc. magazines. Please only add online zines focused on fashion and/or beauty with great photography.

Hope this interests a few people as a resource for following trends, getting ideas, and submissions. Thanks!

You may be just doing consumer, monthly or offset printed pieces or non-newsprint names, but you can't leave out WWD from fashion lists.

Anybody know if they still publish Spoon? I haven't found it in ages. I'll be sad to lose that one.

EDIT: Spoon's officially been axed. For the second time. (I ever tell you guys how much I hate publishing?)

Unfortunately, aside from the well-known majors with lots of international versions (Vogue, Elle, Cosmopolitan, Marie Claire, etc.) I don't know much of the Japanese magazine market. Those I have stumbled across at international newsstands vary widely from boring crap (cluttered and backwards) to extremely interesting, with unique style.

One market that's kind of emerging that is really quite interesting right now is Austrailia. A hemisphere away from pretty much the rest of the fashion and publishing world, they have a tendency to do their own thing. One of many titles I've run across that I rather like, and is quite unlike most others is No.ise.

agency representation is a pretty simple filter for assessing a model's chances of breaking into high fashion. the vast majority of models appearing in fashion editorials are with major agencies.

i spent some time this summer with a widely published fashion photog. he has about 60 stories published (from bazaar to vogue to zink) totalling about 700 pages. he gets all of his models by looking through agency lists, finding the model with the look he wants, and then calling the agency to book. in most cases, the model works for free (possible tearsheet and international exposure). his crew (mua, hair, stylist, etc.) also generally work for free. in some cases, he has paid a reduced rate of $150/day for a top model from wilhemina, ford, etc.

this photographer does not shoot fashion editorials to make money. he often loses money on these shoots. but the exposure has landed him a lot of advertising and catalog work where he makes big money. his first published fashion story in the 80's landed him a 3-week catalog shoot for a major designer where he made $40,000 (or almost $3000/day).

most magazines pay about $150/page for editorial. $900 from Lucire Magazine for a 6-page fashion story is not going to cover the production costs of a shoot, when you include pre- and post-production time, studio/equipment overhead, rentals, props, shipping wardrobe/accesories to and from designers, etc.

he continues to produce and shoot several fashion stories each year. not all of them are published, even when he is shooting "on spec" for a magazine. he could never make a living off fashion editorial alone.

Ditto. And this is stuff that's just not well-understood by many of those (especially new models) around here.

We've listed a lot of the independent magazines out of the major markets of Europe. What's missing are the majors and independents in the secondary markets like Eastern Europe, Japan, South America, etc.

Most of the major Eastern European publications don't have websites. I shoot for some of them. They're funky operations. On one hand, they're like "majors" and on the other hand they're more akin to mom-and-pop operations. There are TONS of little independents in these markets, printed on glossy stock and all, that sell maybe 100 copies and are the pet projects of the many ultra-rich of Eastern Europe and their kids, having fun with publishing and laundering money in the process. They don't generally operate websites, and those that do don't update with anything resembling frequency. They don't even get their issues out according to their own schedule, usually. (Or pay what they agree to, and so on........)

I have updated the list in the original post to include all the titles added in the posts above. I found a few links, too.

I still need:
Citizen K
Pop
Muse
No.ise
Vogue Russia

Does any one know how to fine these websites if they exist?

Keep those small independent titles coming! It was great to find Ten By Ten and Issue One.

Here are a few good fashion/style-centric ezines:

Se7en Magazine (online) http://www.se7enmag.com
Phamous 69 (online) http://www.phamous69.com

FYI, No.ise is published out of Austrailia, just so you know.

any interest out there in doing something like this for fashion designers? maybe break it into the majors and the independents (and also by country)? possibly useful links for finding designers to provide clothing for shoots.

fyi, the designer decides to support your work in hopes of tearsheet exposure and they send you clothing which you send back undamaged after the shoot (or pay for it).

same problem as the magazines, i haven't found any good link sites that really have comprehensive lists of designers.

let me know and i'll get it started.

POP doesn't list a URL in their last 2 issues, and their info email ([email protected]) doesn't seem to be associated with a website. popmagazine.co.uk returns a no server error, while www.popmagazine.co.uk redirects to greatmagazines.co.uk--a magazine store. sad The closest I've found is their parent company's parent company: http://www.emap.com/brands-content.asp?resource=174 -- which only lists contact info.

YES, PLEASE: Styling for 6mos and the frusration comes from finding showrooms, and it also comes from working on Submissions with no pull letter wink So, yes that would help - I also want to say that this is one of the MOST helpful and positive, informative forums.
