I just did a Browse of the models in my area, and when arranged according to when they signed up on MM, it seems that the average age of incoming models in my area is in the 30s. Maybe it's a midwest thing, where suburban housewives are suddenly bored and want to give modeling a try. (I'm in Cincinnati, OH)

I haven't contacted anyone to do a shoot through MM in quite a while because none of the local pool holds any appeal for me.

How about in your areas? Are you seeing the same thing, or am I just unlucky to be in a MM dead zone?

While Cincinnati is not a modelling hot spot like Duluth, Bowling Green, KY or Madison, Wi, I don’t think it is a “Dead zone” exactly…I am sure aspiring models the world over still think “To make it, REALLy make it…I have to get to Cincinnati!”

Bowling Green, KY has better access to promising models because of it's relative close proximity to Nashville, TN.

I wouldn't imagine that anyone under 35 or so would even know what MM is, or how to use it. It's an antiquated networking platform

I was thinking about this recently, it's not in your area . . . It's in the whole world . . . Probably due to social networks such as Instagram and so on . . .  15 years ago many young girls (18-25) agreed to perform some lingerie or nude shots, because the chances for their friends or family was poor to find photos from them on internet if they were not watching models/photographers specialized websites . . .
Now most of the time (unless a very few models) the remaining models posing nude are the same that were 18-25 yo  10 years ago . . .  Another reason can be the facility to convert nude images in porn with "ai"

I would also like more representation of younger models on MM, representation matters!

haha ok that aside, other sources aren't a great replacement for MM, especially when it comes to discovering whether your next muse is okay posing nude, or her measurements.

They can't post a portfolio of nudity on instagram if they are comfortable with that, and I like and relate more to the value system of women that aren't doing OnlyFans or sex work (at the very least not leading with it as a core part of their identity, since you would never actually know if that's how they paid the bills or had fun on the side)

even here in Los Angeles, when using other photographer's portfolios and local publications as a recruiting method of "this model actually showed up", nude models are mostly still just traveling models, and the effort to find someone local is quite high

its honestly fine, if you're okay dealing with the potential drama of a new model's career there are infinite models for free and affordable rates. I'm just spoiled that we used to be able to browse in a catalogue for scarce traits and just pick one.

I think there are 3 major issues that contribute to this.

MM is an old clunky site, and does not operate like social media sites. It doesn't attract young people.

Young people use their cell phones for pictures of themselves. They can edit like pros and have no need to deal with potentially inappropriate men to get pictures anymore.

Facial recognition software - it used to be that everyone in a model's life (past present AND future) wouldn't know about their modeling unless they were told by the model. Now, there is no way to keep nude work private. Models can use a stage name, but still get doxxed because 2257 laws don't care about model privacy and combined with facial recognition, many don't feel safe to shoot nudes. The exception is women who have made a career out of it and don't give a flip what their family and friends think.

So, either shoot who is available or start doing landscape and nature photography. "Photographers" are almost obsolete.

Aside from MM being old. Young models literally care about none of these things 🤣 thanks for writing it but there are more than enough people that disregard these issues. The exception you acknowledged is the rule.

This is about booking models and paying them, not seeking payment from them, in which case its true that this route of photography is a fledgling trade. It doesn't matter that they can edit themselves in that case.

The only friction is finding them and sorting them by attribute.
