I Have been asked to do hair ( and possibly makeup) for and entire wedding party. I have never done one outside of the shop before so im curious what the going rates may be. This is also for a familly friend ( my best friends brother) who I know isent working with a lot of money to begain with. I want to help them out as much as I can but i dont want to sell myself short for all the work I have to do. I want to say its a party of about 7 incuding the bride and 2 little girls. what would you do?

For a friend I would ask how much can they could afford. They should not expect you to do it for free. If it was just the Bride I would say I will give you this one but with such a big wedding party you will need something out of this. If they ask you for a price then tell them a kit fee of what you charge per person and then your hourly rate. DeAnn

thats sounds like a good way to go. Im really not even sure how many it will be. All I know for sure is my friend, her mother, the bride, her best friend, 2 flower girls and some other bridesmaid. I dont even know about the mother of the bride or anyone else. would it be wrong to sugest to her to have the bridesmaids pay indivedually? I think with all of them, a flat fee and an hourly would add up to a whole lot. Im afraid to set a high price and look greedy.

I have done 2 weddings, basically forced & only did makeup... one was on 4 people (1600.00) & the other was for 7 people (2800.00) If it is family what you could do is do the bride as a gift to the new couple (they love that) & then charge everyone else that ISNT in the family at least 100.00 for makeup & tell them you will throw in hair for 50.00 more so a total of 150.00 per person & THAT is frickin kmart prices my dear... so you are doing them a favor... To make it sound better, find out when the wedding is & tell them to all save however many months away it is by the price.. so say july to save 30.00 a month to pay for your services (that is per person) Great luck!

No offense to these two, but for the original poster, I wouldn't go by the numbers posted here. Best thing to do is do a search for makeup artists in your area that have a bridal website or are known for bridal work so you can see what your market going rate is. It's actually an easy thing to do. You can even go on theknot.com or weddingwire.com to see what makeup/hair people advertise and see if they have websites linked to their ads. Do that research then come up with an average number. I'd tell your friend what that number is and have her decide what a fair price would be. That way she knows the value of the service and it's in her hands to make an offer that would be fair. At that point you either take it or leave it tell her what number you had in mind (if she offers less than you would like to do it for). You my be surprised her number could be higher than what you originally thought she could afford. Good luck and I can't stress enough about researching your market rate. It's (obviously) different wherever you may be. Kat

The rates I charge in the South Beach are totally different that the rates charged in West Palm...and that's only a 1 hour drive away. You need to know the average rates (for your experience level) in your area before you can quote correctly.

Pricing is a tricky thing...especially in a non-major market. (I live in Nashville.) I find that other MUAs shop my numbers continuously. I can tell because sometimes the "brides" won't get back to me after I have sent over my rate sheet...and I know my numbers are NOT out of my market. You have to be prepared for that as well...it's a part of the business. Realize also that you're offering an on-location service that other MUAs in spas don't have the luxury (unless it's an off day) of working...and that of course costs more.
