There are many threads about weight for a model, but it's really all about measurements. Quick reminder to all female models. Here's how to take ACCURATE measurements: BUST Measure around the FULLEST part of the bust (include the boobs, don't smash them down). The soft-tape should be taut but not pushing on the skin. DO NOT measure underneath your breasts like you do when you're looking for your bra-size. *Addition: a question was asked in another thread about whether or not to wear a bra. Short answer: No bra. But, if your breasts are "put in place" with a very SHEER bra (no lining or padding whatsoever), then wear one. You may want to see how different the measurements are, and go with the larger one. WAIST This one's the easiest. Measure your natural waistline. This is usually (but not always) right where your belly button is. It's the smallest part of your waist. Again, the soft-tape should be taut, but don't pull it tight where your skin is being pinched. And don't "suck it in". That will give you an inaccurate measurement. HIP The easiest to f-up. Here's the deal: you gotta include your ASS. I know, it sucks. Especially for those of us who actually have one. Measure around the FULLEST part of your seat. This is not a measurement of where your hip bones are. It's generally a good 3-4 inches lower than that. When I worked as a fit model, they always said it should really be called a "seat measurement". So measure around your ass, don't pull the soft-tape too tight. And there you go! Addition: Inseam: measure from your crotch to your ankle. Not to the floor. Crotch to your ankle bone. Thigh: fullest part of the thigh. Don't make the tape pinch your skin. **these measurements are good to know if you're applying for a fit modeling job, and casting directors MAY ask (though it's less common), depending on the designs they are showcasing.

We all need a reminder now and again. Now, when you see fashion models on agency websites, you'll know how you stack up, if being a fashion model is your goal.

Wow, my measurements were wrong. Not, like, horribly wrong. But I guess it's better to be more accurate if possible. I had 33-23-33 up, and I just measured myself according to these rules and it's actually 33-24-34. Thanks for this thread.

I'm not that chesty, but just a little pull looks cheap and too loose around the waist doesn't flatter either. Suppose I could get things tailored, but I'd rather just shop off the rack. Don't get me started on my my big butt, smaller hips & things shopping issues!

Often the shirts gap in the breast area, or the pants are too big at the waist (or too tights at the hips -but this is rare). I wanna lose an inch of hips!

I'm right there with you. There was a thread about those issues that I started a while back, and another by Rena. The conclusion ended up to be that everything needs to be retailored. Mind you, my boyfriend is 5'6, and barely 100 pounds. He wears pants in size 26X31. Try finding that size. It's impossible. I guess I could dress him in (decent) kiddie clothes, but he doesn't like dressing very casually.

My boyfriend is 5'7 and a half and like 130 but he has tiiiny hips so it's hard for him to find pants his size right off the rack so like me he usually has to order them online. Aw, yeah my boyfriend wouldn't like that either.

When I worked as a fit model, they always said it should really be called a "seat measurement". So measure around your ass, don't pull the soft-tape too tight. And there you go! I would just like to insert some of my input from personal experience... Good points about the Bust measurements. But I would like to add one thing. You do need to wear a bra on certain occasions while measuring. If you would be wearing a bra underneath a very fitted garment, then you should measure again with the bra you will be wearing for the shoot or event to make sure you will fit into that garment correctly. I say this because of all of the clothing I purchase online. I buy a lot of vintage clothing that cannot be returned and I have to go by what the details of the listing say for that item. If I want it bad enough, but think it may be too small, I measure with a bra that I would most likely wear underneath to make absolutely sure it will fit and fit comfortably. Some other measurements are also very nice to have if you like to purchase clothing online. (Especially vintage clothing) For jackets and coats, I recomend getting a shoulder measurement. To measure this area you will need a friend or just to be very flexible. Take the measuring tape accross the back of your shoulders. There is a very pointy bone that sticks out under the skin of the back shoulder area. Measure from those points. Don't forget to measure your arms as well! I hate sleeves that fall too short. Measure from the top of the side of your arm, down to wear you like to have your sleeves end. Do measure around your head when you purchase a hat. For inseem, measure from your crotch to where you like to have your pants stop. I like mine on the long side. One more thing about measurements: When you go to buy those clothes if you are an online shopper like me, or just won't have the opportunity to try them on before you wear them, take your measurements and add an inch or more (depending on how you want it to fit) to your measurement. This usually applies to the shoulder, bust and waist measurements. You will want to be able to breath in your clothing and allow for the possibility of bloating and everything. As models, it's important for our clothes to fit us properly. That is an often overlooked detail that can take our image quality up a notch or two. Hope this helps!

A tip I've heard to find a pair of pants that fit length and if they are loose around waist to take them to a tailor. I havent tried it and not sure what the cost would be.

Mine is a 35. I think Alloy goes up to 37 inch. And they have some really cute jeans.

According to this, I've been putting down the wrong bust measurement the whole time. I always put down my bra band size because if I did this actual measure my bust would be a 38 and with my hips at a 34, It makes me sound like I'm top heavy

I havent tried it and not sure what the cost would be. The problem with this is that most tailors won't take in jeans or pants sewn like jeans at the back, as the seams are doubled and it would require them to completely dismantle the jeans and reassemble it back. Or so I was explained. That's how I was stuck with a j-brand jeans in size 26 (what am I to do with *that* now?). Also, they cannot take it in easily for more than a size. My boyfriend found that the hard way with a jeans in size 30 that he wanted retailored to 26. Once, the tailor agreed to take in a garment that was way too big (a Jones New York merino wool coat that was a size 4 - I wear 0). It looks good, but you can see that it's not as great as it should have been. Serious retailoring is risky business.
