Whenever I find a store that carries it, which is rare, I really dig checking out VISIONAIRE ( http://www.visionaire.com ) . Unfortunately each issue is about $175 because each one is printed and manufactured differently. One issue has a dozen or so vials of various rare colognes and perfumes attached to the inside cover. Another issue comes with designer toys.

Visionaire also does "V" magazine.

Are there any other magazines you all like. I'm looking for really inspiring fashion photography. Obviously MM is inspiring, but there's nothing like seeing big full page bleed photos all glossy and stuff, you know?

I think I recall a magazine that was pretty cool called CLEAR but can't remember. I thought I had some issues laying around but can't find them.

Clear is good.

No.ise, Highlights, 10, French, Vogue Italia, i-D, W, V, Surface, Numero

There are many others that sometimes have great stuff, but these are the ones that never disappoint.

Yeah, once the number of available issues goes down, they actually jack up the price. There is one on their website that is $875. The thing you gotta realize is that there is stuff in there that actually is worth that price. You actually get stuff with the magazine. You're right, it's not a magazine... well, it's more than a magazine. Each issue is an amazingly-crafted and manufactured product with brilliant photography and the design is impeccable.

A Visionaire subscription is an investment. $675 a year. Some issues are very limited edition. By the end of the year, you can sell your 4 "issues" for at least 50% more. In a few years, people will buy it for $2000 or more. The trick is finding the buyers.

I saw one guy on eBay selling his Visionaire collection for $10,000. Someone bought it. He only paid something like $3000 for all the issues.

Current favourite is V.  I think we have different editions here but the fall edition (no Brad Oitt) on cover is great.

If I wanted to invest, I'd buy stocks, not magazines.

If I wanted to spend that kind of money, I'd rather select myself each item that I will buy, not get a bundle.

If I wanted to see brilliant photography, I'd buy a book or go to a museum.

If I wanted to know more about the artistic scene, I wouldn't trust a magazine that was printed months ago, I'd go to the art shows and events.

If I wanted great design, I'd open my eyes: it's everywhere.

But that's just me. You can do what you want with your money. To me though, there's cheaper and/or better alternative everywhere.

There are a whole bunch more but I either don't have any URL's for them or I just can't be bothered top look them up.

Right behind me I have a pair of shelf units stacked to overflowing with fashion magazines going back almost 10 years. I still spend maybe £50-100 per month on printed material.

If you want to see the real cutting edge in fashion photography and beauty, DON'T buy Vogue, Harpers, Marie Claire, V, or any magazine that has been produced in the USA.

'Spoon' - probably the best fashion magazine I ever saw (and I've seen A LOT!) - is no longer in production.

Does anyone remember a magazine that was published in the late 80's called 'The Manipulator'? It was oversize: A0 folded to A1 (really massive) and contained some of the most awesome fashion images ever shot. I've been trying to find back issues for sale but haven't found any yet.

Awesome post Steve, thanks! Plaza... I have one of the early issues of that magazine laying around. It's been years.

Anybody remember "Blur"?

I think I agree with you on the American mainstream fashion mags. I like the stuff that pushes it a bit. Again, great list.

Excellent post, Eloise. I do all of the things you mentioned, however you have to understand something about us tactile, visual designer types. I went to art school, studied design. I like to make things, and touch things, and feel things. I like to open up weird books and see each page made differently, some engraved, others silk-screened, still others maybe on newspaper with monoprint. I like the feeling of "hand-made art" to a very high design quality. It's in my blood.

I collect magazines... I have issues of NEST magazine... each issue was cut and organized differently. I have some issues of the German Bauhaus-legacy design magazine "Form + Zweck".

They're just fun to look at and thumb through and imagine how much "kraft" was put into them.
