I'm new at being a makeup artist, I was mostly doing it for friends and to build a portfolio so it was free, but recently I've begun to work with photographers and other models and I don't really know what a reasonable price would be. Any sugestions?

I know I am not a stylist, but here is my opinion:

I really don't think you should be charging until you have more than one model in your portfolio.

The work you have is really quite good, though...so building up your book should be easy for you.

Good luck!

Ridiculous!

You should charge as much as you can at any and all opportunities.  Who cares how many models are in the book, or even if you have a book at all?  This is how we pay for the shoots that build our books.  If someone's offering $$$, I'm accepting!  Guess I'm just that way.

You should charge whatever amount of money lets you sleep at night should you not get the job because you charged too much.  IMO.

I wasn't saying it the way you took it.

I was merely pointing out that the emphasis should be on building, growing, doing better.  $ comes after...take what is offered, don't short yourself, but to charge as much as more experienced artists would be presumptious and a bit unfair.

I agree that I should focus on building my portfolio, which is actually why I don't know how much I should charge. My main concern for the moment is maintaining my supply of makeup, hair product and the gas it costs to travel to locations. By no means would I think to charge more than my experience is worth at the moment, but supplies aren't cheap so I just want to be able to replace what I use at least for the moment.

You'll have a hard time getting paid jobs with a null portfolio.  After all that is your resume.   I suggest try and trade services with photographers first.  they can help you build a folio, and you can help them with makeup.  You can trade your kit fee in exchange for a bulb / studio fee.

If you are good then what ever you charge is reasonable.
I do not ask a MUA how much they charge, they tell me, but I dont ask, If I like their work I ask if they are available, the cost is not important. A good MUA can make a shoot work, a bad one can ruin the images.

Building a portfolio IS what I'm trying to do, I will have more pictures soon and comments will be welcome wether good or bad. It's just that the photographer I'm working with asked me how much I charged and I didn't have a clue as to what I SHOULD charge once I get going. For the moment I am content with trading my work for headshots and a couple of prints. Also keep in mind that I also do the hair for the shoots.

...also I do invest in educating myself as far as makeup and hair goes and as a hairstylist I do KNOW that knowledge and ability counts for a LOT when setting prices.

This is the only answer that remotely answers the question with a $ amount rather than critiquing the portfolio. I was also interested in hearing what MUA's charge across the country. Thanks.

email professionals and ask them.  Professionals that do the same kind of work you are going to be doing in the same area you will be doing it in because rates very from coast to coast and also from commercial work to editorial etc and another price for model portfolio work....  It also veries depending on how in demand you are...if your portfolio (and I didnt look at yours) isnt up to the local standards you can charge anything you like and probably wont get it anyway....

the  caliber of your portfolio will determine what kind of people will hire you  and what kinds of jobs you will be hired to do...  If you want great clients and top dollar they need to see that caliber of work in your book.

so email a pro and give them the job details.  Kit fees are not something  a photographer will understand...this is done in TV, Video and film.  Per model fees  and per look fees are usually charged by a real beginner  and it's a big mistake in my opinion.

My first job was one of my best paying jobs. Ya know, before I had a book. Everyone was happy, I got a family to feed. I say get your money.
