I've seen quite a few of these advertised, such as the cheap Savage unit linked below from Adorama. If you were going to buy new a new portable background stand (as opposed to a used unit via eBay), what maunf would you recommend? Or just go eBay?

I didn't go cheap, but got a kick-butt support system from Calumet:

They have a smaller version of this, but I love the big version. Comes with a nice carry bag, too. Very heavy-duty.

I've got this one and love it..Portable and can have 3 different backgrounds. Ok so its alot more than $56 ($205), but worth it.

I have the smaller version smile  I think it's great.  Same width and goes 9' high instead of 12'.  I didn't see myself ever needing to go higher than 9'.

One of my assistants used the Savage one.  It works and it hasn't broken yet.  For the price it is a reasonable product, but it's certainly not the same as the heavier duty things.  I use the Bogen stands and add a Bogen 2983 bar.

I made mine from Adorama's 4 roll backdrop system and two 12 foot light stands plus a clip on each stand to hold canvas backgrounds. The set up works great and I did not pay much either by bidding on Ebay. I think I paid 14 dollars for one stand, 8 dollars for the other and 35 dollars for the 4 roll backdrop system.

I think I have something similar to that - but mine goes taller than that one.
It works fine for what I need it for.

I would love to get one of these pop-up things for outdoor location stuff:

Hi

That Savage one is very cheap, it also looks incredibly flimsy! So don't forget
to ad the cost of legal fees, everytime a full width roll falls on a models head
(Ouch!)  :-)

Not cheap but Manfrotto (Bogen) autopoles + expans ...best.

Gaffer tape.  Works well, cheap and portable.

Absolutely... But it does tend to pull the paint off my walls. :-/

I have the Savage set and have never had a problem with it. It's nice & light and comes with a pretty handy little carrying bag. The legs tripod out wide enough that it is surprisingly stable. I only use it with cloth backgrounds (and not very often) so I can't say how it works with roll paper.
