Hi,

I'm interested in getting some constructive feedback on my skin retouching in the image below.
Just wondering if its too much, too little, what I could improve on etc.

Large PNG screenshots at 100% in Photoshop:

Thanks!

I like what you did very much. This seems like a case where Portraiture can prove its worth in evening out slight differences in skin tone -- after the detail work is done, and you did it very well. I emailed you a copy of your retouched version with Portraiture applied. See what you think.

Thanks for that! It seemed to work quite well at "smoothing" out the uneven tones from the D&B.

I agree that the DB work looks great, but the skin tone could use a bit more evening out (esp. by her hair line). Also, some of the tonal sculpting you did looks a little artificial. Maybe focus more on defining her features rather than darkening the edges of her face.

But for the most part it looks great!

1. I don't like the contours you did, it looks over done and over-saturated on the edges.

2. The whites are so distracting on the chin and the forehead and I would tone them down but you enhanced them.

3. Her nose could be reshaped near the left-nostril and the highlighting near the tip looks fake.

4. The eyes and lips seem ignored/less done. I would love to see more color and better color on the lips, esp. the lower lip.

5. The colors are no where popping out, bad, this pic does not draw my attention, you have almost ignored the fabric, the peacock feather and the artificial rose. You need to add punch to them.

The verdict: The image has so much more scope and key areas you didn't even touch. Besides all I mentioned above, I would also pay attention to the colored lighting [not sure about the technical name] there, I mean the reds/blues near the edges of the model and spread them a little more and tone their saturation down.

Thanks for the feedback, if you read my post properly though you would see that I only did retouch work on the skin and was only asking for a critique on that. I did not retouch the rest of this image.. hence why I asked how the skin retouching looked.

This was my first attempt at D&B and I can see now that I went a bit over board with darkening around her face. Will keep this in mind next time.

Just talking about the SKIN (Because the OP DID name this thread "Skin Critique")...

I think you did an excellent job. I don't think you went overboard with the D&B at all. My one critique would be for you to either get rid of, or extend the red hued contouring line that the MUA created on the forehead.

Other than that the skin is flawless and looks perfectly natural. I would change a thing else.

I just wanted to point out everything, I had some extra time to focus on the image, so I thought lemme post everything; again this was done for your benefit! Cheers!

I am glad you did point out about not playing around with the other portion of the image, but I saw some changes, so I pointed out smile

Very well! You can and you will improve, keep practicing. Seek the DAR Challenges, Contests, and Samples section here for photos for your port. and choose ones that have a lot of skin texture, for them being better photographs for skin retouching practice.
