Hey MMers,

My name is Jenn. I started modeling on and off for about three years now.  I just removed some pictures out of my portfolio and added new ones. I just wanted to make my port a much stronger looking one with different varieties of myself and themes. Could you help me or give me ideas of what I should add or remove? What should I do for my next shoot?

Thank you so much!

Jenn~

Hi!
Your book needs more of an editorial feel to it.  It helps to think like an actor.  Stop going to portrait photographers and go to some one who shoots commercial advertising or stock.

A lot of your work is very...weak. You need to contact some "industry pro" types of photographers. The ones who know exactly how to make you look your very best. Talk over some concepts. You're short like me so commercial print and beauty are going to be two types of modeling that you can do professionally.

Good advice from KG photo.

But make sure your port is about you, not the photographer.

Clever backgrounds and dramatic lighting are for photographer ports, to show off their creativity.

Model ports are so agents can see what you look like, how expressive you are, and if you can do poses that don't look like you are posing.

You can combine both to certain degree but you want the agency to see A PERSON, NOT A PICTURE OF A PERSON. It's a subtle difference, but I think you know what I mean. You don't want to be upstaged!

Model ports need just two things:

1) Strong headshots
2) Strong full length shots

Anything else is distraction and detrimental. Setting: DOES NOT MATTER What you are wearing: DOES NOT MATTER. Hairstyle and makeup: Sure, you want to vary these from image to image to show your versatility, but it's all about EMOTION AND EXPRESSIVENESS.

Do a few shoots with 60% to 100% headshots.

Always convey an emotion outwards towards the camera. That eliminates the worried "how is this coming out" look that many models get. Fortunately you don't have that problem, but you want to go even farther in the other direction (overacting, so to speak)

You can practice using cards and a mirror. Go thru the deck using the suits for four moods (happy, sad, angry and sexy) and numbers for intensity. For example, a 2 of diamonds could mean mildly happy whereas a King or Ace would mean ecstatic..like you just won the lottery.

When you get to the shoot, all you have to do is the happy and the sexy, and always at full intesity, so you will be over-prepared and feel very confident.

Make sure you are feeling the emotion inside you, first, and "letting it out", letting it show on your face,  as opposed to working outside in, trying to twist your face into an expression of an emotion.

OK, I think you got it, now. LOL

You are 4'11" tall, don't do nudes or anything even remotely approaching nudity or sexy, and you bring an escort to every shoot. Your problem is that you are greatly limiting the number of people who will consider working with you, even in NYC.

My suggestion is to loosen up on the limitations a LOT. It will open so many more doors for you.

Lower your chin, up the nose shots are not the most flattering, eyes are dark

Jenn,

Seriously cHanGe ur MYspEaK name. It's really not doing you any good. I would'nt have guessed you were 25....far from it. If I saw you on a search, I would've never clicked on your profile.

What do YOU want to do on your next shoot? Do you want pretty pictures, or do you want something your qualified to do based on your stats?

Your cute & have a pleasing figure but 4'-11" will knock you out of many boxes, the others you could do, you have eliminated based on what you wrote on your portfolio page.

Even if I was updating my own commercial or editorial ports, I would never use someone that is 4'-11". For that matter I wouldn't use 5-4 either. Anyone else that might TF for those shots to use in their agency ports aren't going to use you either.

As a net model of your stature you have about three options. Alt., glam, or nudes. You've eliminated the nudes, but many folks would use you for glam, cute as you are. smile

Crank the glam up to whatever your limits are. Get yourself a couple of drop dead gorgeous headshots...your face will certainly get the attention of a few folks. Use a qualified MUA when doing those. Some of the best $$ you could spend.

Ahhh. Just noted your escort policy. Certainly your decision, but generally speaking many good shooters don't like to go that route. If your paying someone, that might snag you a couple more.

Good luck.
