At least a couple of people per week ask me how I shoot people under the northern lights, live on location, in the frigid Canadian Arctic. Usually the best time is during the fall when everything is still unfrozen. This was shot in August-ish

Ideally the winter but it can get quite cold (-32C today brrr..see self pic from last night..) :

So I wrote a how-to-guide about how exactly I do it. This site ended up featuring it, which a friend of mine started it about a month ago and asked if I'd contribute something awesome to it.

Already it's got a fair amount of people checking it out and about 9000 twitter followers.. https://twitter.com/ijlmagazine pretty cool. Go see it. Then you can do your own northern lights photography of models under aurora borealis big_smile and stars. and stuff. Like so:

So pretty! It looks unreal. Do you live there forever and get to see it all the time?

I bet it would take a pretty tough model to get into that water and to actually pose!  smile

That'd be cool.. I tried to ask a few people to do it but the ice and all sad sadly.

Though it would be nice to see if I could try that in the fall and spring..on a lake or something. Now that'd be wicked.

I'd ask you to come up and try it out with me but I'm only here for 3 weeks just now sad ..that said, come up here anyway big_smile and do that!

Great shots!  I have always wanted to see the aurora borealis.
Where in the Canadian Arctic is the best place to see it?
For the shoot in August what time was it?  I heard they only have a few hours of darkness.

How wonderful!!  I look at your work often.

A friend of mine, Gabe, has some some images of the Aurora that blow me away.  Wish I had been in any of the shots.

We tried to collaborate this year- working with a model is not something he had ever done before.  It's not for everyone.

I'm glad it's for you!
