OK I admit it. I am a full-service photographic prostitute. I specialize in nothing. I will shoot almost anything for money. I have to admit, after 20 years of swearing I would NEVER shoot another one, I actually shoot WEDDINGS now too. And like it. I am a Photo Whore. A total Graphics Slut. And proud of it. Paul

It's not necessarily a poor word choice: the definition quoted in no way precludes using the term to describe somebody who feels their forte is in more than one particular style or type of photography, approach or subject matter. It does not preclude them having other specialties. It's an intransitive verb being used in absolutely correct fashion. I specialize in nude photography. I also specialize in several other things- as do many doctors. I'll admit your example is pushing it, though:-)

I specialize in nude modeling. Nudes ARE my specialty.

A specialist doctor can work in general practice, but (s)he can not specialize in general practice. I never said anything about specializing in general practice. I just said you can do more than one thing. Another example might be a basketball player. (s)he might be a 3-point & free-throw specialist. Multiple specialties. Depending on how you want to break things down... I agree you can't specialize in everything as mentioned in the OP's post. But as the statement in the sentence above... one could say they specialize in portait photography (or people photography or whatever you want to call it) --just a different breakdown

This (and I'm quoting) is not, in my understanding, a correct usage: Photographer has over X years of experience, and specializes in Glamour, swimwear, commercial, fine art, artistic nude, nature, fashion, and runway photography. I've seen that a few times.. And it makes the gears in my brain slip every time..

Actually Holden, your father could do general practice so the answer is yes he COULD but since he couldn't do it as well he chooses not to.

If you do two things best.. You don't have a specialty.. This isn't a crime.. It's language.

I think you must have misread that. when I said "as well" I meant that in the way of meaning "also" and not as in.. comparably or whatever.
