Amateur photographer recently retired from the corporate world trying to improve both my shooting skills as well as processing. From a retouching perspective what could I do to improve this image.

hey John, nice work. I love how the eyes pop, and their colour is very vivid.
The face looks a little bit airbrushed, especially in the lighter areas. You might want to try burning the area a little bit, or try another method of retouching, to retain better texture and have a more realistic look.

i agree with above.
the edit is good but its obviously retouched and pushed fairly far. 

I think the over sharpening is also causing it to look more retouched than what it is.

I feel like if you just back it off 50% from what you did you will have a nice image.
