Hi,

For the last few years I have been writing a blog in Polish, but now everything will be translate into English. First post is already online, I hope you will like it: http://thomasvoland.com/snow-white

https://en.thomasvoland.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/4c5fb4f3-2931-4123-be01-fe00d513da2f_rw_1920.jpg

My blog is about photography and retouch. In next articles I write a lot about  lightnings setup, describe many different studio lamps, modificators, write something about retouch and everything what you need to do it – monitors, color management etc.

These are some of my photos so that you know what types of photo sessions on my blog you can expect soon:

Hello again!

Next week - nex post on my blog: The Power of color by Dior: http://thomasvoland.com/the-power-of-color-by-dior

"In August 2011, my country hosted a competition for make-up artists, organized by Dior and blogmakijaz.pl website. Its prizes included Dior cosmetics as training with Alex Chatti (Dior’s chief make-up artist) and Julie Bodrier (Sephora’s chief make-up creator). Karolina Zientek, a make-up artist cooperating with me on nearly every beauty shot in my portfolio, concluded that we should participate.
The task was to create a make-up and take three shots of it: the whole face, a profile and a close-up of shut eyelids. (…)" Read more: http://thomasvoland.com/the-power-of-color-by-dior

As others have said, I especially like that you admit to screwing up. There are some who seem to never make a mistake, at least will not admit to it. And showing how to fix the screwup is a very nice touch.

The way it runs from good text to diagrams to images appeals to me and easily translates into..."oh, I see what he did here".

I also like that even as the new kid on the block (by the standards of some of us old farts) you do not come on as if you have just discovered the wheel. You simply point out that this is new to you personally. Makes it much easier for me to take you seriously, and to learn from new eyes. I am always learning, as there is a lot I have forgotten, and a lot I never learned, and a lot to learn with all the advantages of new technology.

Your site is bookmarked and recommended to others.

Please continue to post here whenever you update.

New post on my blog. It's about doing photos with just 1 light: http://thomasvoland.com/one-light-setup

https://en.thomasvoland.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2013/02/DSC_8383-remake.jpg

To me, lighting is a fundamental factor in photography and I guess that many of you share this opinion. People use one light at the very beginning, when they don’t have more equipment, but a photo taken using one light doesn’t have to be worse than a photo taken with two or three lights. As usual, it all depends on the result you want to achieve – and there are situations where one light is absolutely sufficient and more lights would simply spoil the effect (…)

New post. About fashion photography in small studios: http://thomasvoland.com/fashion-in-small-rooms

https://en.thomasvoland.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2014/04/3562158c-d583-4493-8ff2-b0330a54da07_rw_1920-scaled.jpg

https://en.thomasvoland.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2014/04/kingacover.jpg

In a real studio, you’ll never face the problem of insufficient space, but you can often find yourself in pseudo-studios, which are too small or too low. Moreover, a photo shoot is sometimes taken with the use of a studio backdrop positioned in a flat (that’s my case). I’ve encountered the latter problem, i.e. insufficient height, but the methods of coping with it are similar to those of dealing with too small surfaces.

Most of my photos have been taken in claustrophobic conditions, but I’ve already written a lot about beauty shots, so now it’s time to focus on fashion photography.

a studio is a studio. there is no pseudo-studio. some studios are bigger than others. but all are studios. i shot for a year or so in a very very tiny studio and made a lot of great photographs there. everyone's studio needs are different.

Hello again after a long, very looooong break 😅. I am still writing my blog, which recently celebrated its 10th birthday. Unfortunately, years ago there were technical problems with the English version of the website and I never dealt with them, but last month I have returned to the topic and instead of a separate site, I now have a multilingual blog and it just works. You can find it at https://en.thomasvoland.com/blog.

There are still dozens of articles left to translate, but I regularly add new ones. My latest post is about A.I. for automatic retouching: https://en.thomasvoland.com/blog/review … telligence
"One mouse click can give such a result, while improving people is only a part of the possibilities"
https://en.thomasvoland.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/maria-zoom.jpg

https://en.thomasvoland.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/Depositphotos_348204440_XLaxl.jpg
(The last photo is from Depositephotos stock)

I continue to regularly write mainly about photography, retouching and related matters, but since A.I. has become commonplace for us (I can't remember the last time I fully manually edited any photos), I also touch on topics such as Topaz A.I, Dall-E, etc. Meanwhile, in the near future there will probably be mainly new articles about photo shoots.

Thank you. I wanted to translate the description of my second photo session with Lara Croft now, but since I referred to very cheap equipment that I used in it, I first translated this guide on very inexpensive equipment:

Strobing – which lamps for beginners. Flashing light vs. constant light: https://en.thomasvoland.com/blog/strobi … ant-light/

https://en.thomasvoland.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2017/08/DSC_6039.jpg

"(…) For my first lighting set (3 lamps, stands, RF controllers, etc.), I spent a total of around 250 USD and described it in an article many years ago. It was an incredibly low price for such possibilities (one good Nikon/Canon Speedlight was more expensive). Since then, a lot has changed on the market, so it’s time for a article about what I would buy today.

I will also write about constant light lamps because many people still wonder if it’s a better option than flashing. Especially since LED lighting is now available everywhere." Read more: https://en.thomasvoland.com/blog/strobi … tant-light

This may be one of the best threads I’ve seen on MM….ever.

Little thyristor pocket strobes can be incredibly useful, once you learn to use the thyristor circuit.  No need for TTL, really, a thyristor will do the correct exposure anywhere, you just need a trigger. When I did architectural work, (on large format film) I had a case full of Vivitar 283s and slaves you could hide almost anywhere, and would just dial ratios in with the simple 4 stop dial.

The OP has got a great mastery of lighting, I look forward to reading more.

The first photos with Lara (you can find a description of the photo session here) caused quite a stir – thanks to them, I started paying attention that someday I would be able to take good pictures and finally found the courage to arrange photo shoots with aspiring models. Some time has passed and I realized that I messed up the first shoot with Lara in many ways. A vision appeared to redo Tomb Raider once again, but only when I improved my skill level. It took me several months." Read more: https://en.thomasvoland.com/blog/tomb-r … econd-time

t’s been over a decade since I moved to Thailand and while I’ve showcased photos of people from various nationalities on the blog, there haven’t been many Thais. I’ve written several times that Thai modeling agencies tend to have people from other countries, and if you do come across Thais, they don’t have the distinctive facial features associated with average Thai but rather look like a mix of different nationalities. To commemorate a decade of living in Bangkok, I did a Q&A with readers about Thailand, with questions directed to both me and Janine, who posed for the photos published here.

Full article with Q&A about living in Thailand and photoshoot with Thai Janine is here: https://en.thomasvoland.com/blog/10-yea … nd-a-thai/

Can you distinguish between photos and graphics generated by AI? Until recently, I had 100% accuracy, but with the latest tools' graphics, I can only guess. I wrote an article about photorealism in AI: https://en.thomasvoland.com/blog/photor … gnific-ai/

I have created an action automating test in Photoshop with Retouch4me DodgeBurn plugin. Results are very useful for photographers and retouchers to know which GPU they should buy for fast automatic retouching with plugins like R4m DB, Heal, Mattifier, and others.

Here are all results of the benchmark: http://thomasvoland.com/retouch4me

https://en.thomasvoland.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/chart-1.jpg

The page contains averaged results of A.I. R4m DodgeBurn test, along with a table distinguishing between official and user results.
https://en.thomasvoland.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/CleanShot-2024-03-25-at-21.37.57.jpg

More data is needed, so please test your computers if possible and share the link with photographers which you known.

I explain everything on this 2 min video:
