Hi - just checking in with other photographers for comments on the following four images - if you could spare the time? As an experiment I did a shoot in a hotel and deliberately didn't bring anything other than my camera - just to see what works and what doesn't. In other words I went extremely minimalist. The issue is images taken in an all-white tiled bathroom (towel head shots) using just the ceiling lights and these all fall well below my preferred quality. On an honest scale how would you rate them? I'm thinking of just sticking with my strobes or building my own lighting with ice lights and gels in future. I've had to stylise the images to save them from obscurity. I'd appreciate it if you would be as honest as you can. They seem to be in line with the rest of your portfolio (and BTW, I find it really interesting how you show your setup in the corner, very cool). When it comes to natural or available light you have little control over the source, so you really have to experiment with location, poses and angles. I think that many strobe photographers try to emulate the results they get with studio lights instead of letting the light source dictate the mood and ambience. Furthermore, sometimes nature simply doesn't want to cooperate, and so you'll just have to get creative and forgo whatever you had originally planned for. https://www.reimeika.ca/page/portfolio? … pg&all https://www.reimeika.ca/page/portfolio? … pg&all https://www.reimeika.ca/page/portfolio? … pg&all I don't know anything about setting up lights myself, so that to me is a black art, I'm hoping to soon visit a fellow photographer who has a studio and check out how things work on the other side of the fence Mar 12 20 12:57 pm Link Mar 12 20 01:39 pm Link Mark Salo wrote: The images are only up temporarily for the purpose of the critique and, when I get the finished images together, I'll upload some with name credits. The corner info is just something I'm doing these days for a project I'm working on Wandering Eyebubble wrote: Mar 13 20 05:36 am Link They all look a little too dark to me, not due to the lighting characteristics but possibly exposure. They might take on a different look if you edit them brighter. You might also get something nice if you go to black and white. Not saying they aren't great shots, just sometimes I change things up when I run into something I'm not totally happy with. Mar 13 20 07:23 am Link They look great to me. Everything you say sounds right. Mar 13 20 11:55 am Link I like your bathroom towel shots only one small flaw though - Wearing the towel indicates that the Models hair is wet ( perhaps just washed ) and under such circumstances it is not likely she would be wearing ear rings Mar 13 20 12:50 pm Link Garry k wrote: I too like those images. Not only earrings but lipstick??? Mar 13 20 03:58 pm Link They look pretty good to me. I would be inclined to play with the exposure and shadows a little, but that is largely a matter of taste. Mar 13 20 04:42 pm Link Thanks for the suggestion of black and white - I did an earlier version (below) but didn't seem to work. I suppose some shots you just have to accept defeat and start from scratch again? Still I think they might look a bit better if they were a tad brighter (editing in post). Mar 14 20 11:16 am Link I agree with others who suggested they might be better if lighter. If you take the first one you posted standing against the red brick wall and feed it to the https://www.everypixel.com/aesthetics website, it might score it around a 45% awesome. Lightning it up, along with a bit of NIK Vivieza lightning to the dark area of the hair and stomach, some overall additional contrast (No more than 50% in PS maybe.), might boost it a lot more, maybe 95%+ awesome. It takes time, but many photos can be improved using it. It's a fun website to get some AI judging feedback off of. I've used it on some of mine which were low to start, and got them up to 100% with work.
