Trying for April. It's a very small gathering, plus taking photos. Keeping the Apr calendar somewhat open, trying for a weekend date. Weekday possible, if that occurs. Initially, 2-5 photographers and 1-3 models. So, it's a chance to join others and try new places. It's not really a group shoot, as people wlll work separately, with a limited size and no walk ins. So, if w/ 1 model, it's 1 photographer at a time. Could be indoors or outdoors. Daytime. The Counties tiers could be changing, so some outdoor places could reopen. If indoors, there could be other limits. Photographers share in costs. Requests are people should have at least a basic portfolio, be open to changes and wearing a mask. We want to be careful and space ourselves.

-Possible, 10/11 or 17/18 or 24/25
-Female models 16-26
-Costs vary, you'll be given advance notice

Great time to try something new. For some, a studio will be new to you. Some private locations could happen. You Don't have to be a great photographer, but maybe reliable. We hope to find people that want to work with others and network.

Now looking towards end of month, or into May. It takes about 2-3 wks for planning, and maybe an outdoor location opens. There's a smaller indoor place, so maybe 2 of us will try it and see if something can be done.

May update. Time is flying by and some parks are not ready and there's unclarity by the government. Myself and 2nd photog are trying to schedule testing a studio. Alternative plan is an outdoor location North of Palm Springs. The weather is cool now and surely temporary. But, that means now and we'll need some luck, per we'll need a home to open for a few people. So, we'll just keep that in mind.

When the time comes, a location will be chosen. It's likely to be private rental or property.

Still trying and when the gears start to click, it will happen. The desert property is available, and I just missed an opp to try it again with 80 temperature. But, things happen. So, you never know if the weather cools again. There's also a 2nd studio being considered.

Also, no one is moving from the desert properties. But at some point, people will start moving again, when the non eviction moratorium is lifted. Also, some people are bring paid not to work, with the additional unemployment benefit. Who knew how to spell moratorium? Who knew part time jobs would pay an extra $300/wk?

Last points for now; When we Restart it will be with new people. With the exceptions of 1 or 2 people, we're starting off fresh and small. Styles will be fashion and/or swimwear. So, portfolios must be appropriate. Masks will be required for now along with spacing.

What does this have to do with a photo shoot?

People should think in terms of what's necessary to accomplish something, when things don't always go smoothly. especially now. Think in broader terms, like how many photographers have tables and canopies? Who's done shoots in the past year?  Myself some, but models are tough to get right now. People aren't moving from the desert area. So, w/o a home, it would be safer not to involve others til a home opens. Ok, if just oneself and model, Fall/Winter follows and the moratorium could be lifted. Many of the decisions made are with others in mind, not just for oneself. Also, all planning is done for Free, sometimes money fronted.

Some abbrev history, this goes back further than most people here, early 2000's for larger shoots, with over 150. Desert shoots from 2011, with about 10, but nothing within 2 yrs. But, each time with a Home, and a couple with a camper- but very few people. It's still a desert, so a home gives a meeting place, shade, bathroom and studio. So, if no home, it's tougher for bathrooms and the weather could change. Hint; models are females and some could be new. So, we also start new and fresh with people that can work together.

True desert stories. A past shoot was 80's-low 90's, pretty good. But, too hot for some photogs outside. So, they stayed inside all day and used the home as a studio. Sometimes we had lights, and one of the best homes also had nice window light and a wood floor. Models were happy to have a bathroom. So, I always arrived earlier to cleanup for Free and setup. We used 7 different homes, some on the same lot, but there's another one never used and best for outdoors. Hopefully, something opens.

This area was in the main lot, modified about 4 yrs ago. It was deemed Western Town. It's next to a shed, that's now a home, and we used it for shoots before it was rented.

Part of planning is knowing the environment from observation and experience. The current situation also includes Father's Day and July 4th. Add: Graduations. But, as time passes, adjustments will be made.

On June 17, the Governors office announced people on unemployment will need to search for work as of July 11. Employers are reporting it difficult to find employees. Currently, unemployment claimants are receiving an additional $300/wk.

From ABC News,
"California has added more than 390,000 jobs since February. In April alone, California accounted for 38% of all new jobs added in the U.S. But that same month, California still had the second-highest unemployment rate in the country at 8.3%."

Right now we're looking at after 7/4, so we'll give it a few days spacing. Meet and Practice in a studio, OC. Likely 3 photographers. You'll need to be new, not having previously attended prior to 2020. Also need a basic portfolio. This could be Brief, just to get familiar with things and hold down costs. We'll cover basic things like who's with us, how to handle equipment, light setups,,,so basic things to make it smoother. Note: You'll need time to setup and cleanup. Don't expect others to do the work for you, on this format.

Time/costs estimates (in total studio hrs):
1) Only Meet/Practice, 2hrs, estimated $19ea (Recommended)
2) With Model, 2hrs + 2.5hrs, estimated $45-55ea

Note: In Total studio hrs. Lowest costs to start is Option 1. As you add time and model(s), costs increase. Myself and photog #2 can handle it. But, if #3 can't, that should be stated upfront. Est w/model is basically a TF. If the plan w/model is known, the full studio time needs to booked in advance. Recommended is option 1, per lowest cost and it's still a bit tough to get models.

Some Q/A:(Updated)
- What Time? Afternoon weekday.or weekend
- Masks Needed? Yes, photographers are generally older, and many with preexisting health conditions.
- Mask for models? Not during modeling.
- Can I invite friends? Maybe at larger locations, if they pay their share.

Date 7/17 Sat. Santa Ana 3P. Meet and practice. For 1-2 photographers. (4 max.) Just 2 hrs to hold expenses down, but just enough time to learn equipment and plans. So, it's a great chance to get going. Please have somewhat current work or basic portfolio for general viewing by models 15-26. No model this day. Cost is $15ea, via paypal. Masks Required and general spacing. Each person will be given a spot for their things. Do not touch other people's gear, I like containers. You may bring 1 folding chair. Some tables and chairs open, given by signup time. Be on time, help setup and cleanup. Be careful with equipment.

View studio, work on 2 setups and talk. Also, use the R2 system. If you have a flashpoint sender, bring it. Some are available to share. But, just stressing the goals are mostly to have fun, update portfolios and network. The attitude is No, we don't know everything and will adjust if possible. For starters, lighting will be basic, like 1 and 2 lights. So there's many pluses to doing this, including testing your equipment.

About a week to go, it needs to be set 72hrs prior to date. We'll go over the studio, take test shots of it, then we'll do 1 setup w/ test shots. For the 1st setup, I'll do most of it and will let everyone make adjustments on light and trigger. Then, 2nd setup and repeat. The 2nd will be more of a team with 2 lights. Only if time, try some fixed backdrops. It's not a seminar, but it may feel like it. Don't be upset if some things are not used or put away. Saving 35min for cleanup, Do Not rush.

Be there 10min before starting time, to break the ice. No hand shakes. Wear masks, gloves ok. We'll go over some things, use bathroom or wait in lobby. Then, we'll go from there. Monolights w/R2 built in, Godox or Adorama. Some triggers available. This will get you comfortable when we have a model or renting yourself.

Update; We did the Meetup on the 17th. So, right now looking for a favorable day, since 1 photographer may not be available in a couple weeks.

--So, 1 more photographer can be considered. You'll join me for a brief meetup, to familiarize yourself with equipment and the plan. You'll be fitted into Setup.Time for 1 Hour. You'll be shown how to use equipment and can take test shots. Cost $10. The cost for 1hr rental is more than that. The advantage of this, is being part of a Team. You can consider it a selling point, like to models or even for other work. The basis of these shoots are shared costs and working together. If already contacted, didn't reply or misc reasons, we'll need to move on as it's a team.

--Also, masks are required and we'll resume temperature checks, contactless. Wash hands

There may be something Last Part of Sept. So, looking for a favorable day.

--1 more photographer can be considered. Could be between 18th-20th. Prefer if person uses Canon. You'll likely take the #3 spot. Then, on a separate day, a shoot w/model is being planned with a higher shared cost that day, tentative 26th. But, to attend shoot, you'll need to do the briefing.

Things are starting to pickup. Models are starting to come back and studio bookings are fairly full. You'll likely join me for a brief meetup, to familiarize yourself with equipment and the plan. You'll be fitted into Setup Time for 1 Hour. You'll be shown how to use equipment and can take test shots. Cost $12. The advantage of this, is being part of a Team. You can consider it a selling point, like to models or even for other work. The basis of these shoots are shared costs and working together. If already contacted, didn't reply or misc reasons, we'll need to move on as it's a team.

From last year, at the practiced location. (Technically, the 2nd practiced location with a shoot in '20.) It's not like this hasn't happened in the past, but just to show it's possible in the 2020's. It's a Team effort, with shared costs for rental and misc. We'll try for TF. For peeps, we're no longer allowed to post site, but the domain was moved, so there's nothing shown now.

This includes a repost from June '21, to understand some of the thinking behind this things.

There's a Desert home open now, Yucca Valley. What's possible is a Sampler Shoot on Mon or Tue. It's short on time, so everything Minimized for best chances. It's also the closest place. Recommended is a partial Gas/TF for models. 1-2 models. Same criteria for photographers, including a basic recent portfolio. No nudes. Also, a mini barbecue possible. After the 31st, this spot not available, but a further place may be open. Being almost June, we'll need cool spells.

With the holiday, it may be too late for a shoot on Mon or Tue. After this, there's another home open for a Limited time. It's a little further, but has more landscape views and a larger patio. The previous post will be reduced for easier reading.

The updated plan is still meeting with the location contact. Mon, casino and barq. Tue, wildlife visit.
