Wedding Makeup....and its rates!
Hey Everyone.... I have a 3 weddings coming up for makeup and was re-thinking about the rates for makeup. Im good with rates for shoots but I havent really ventured the wedding industry...any advice as how to set up rates for wedding or what would be reasonable? Any help would be greatly appreciated.. Thanks!!! *Sorry, I know there are so many forums of rates- and although I've looked and looked didnt find anything for WEDDING RATES" Mar 23 07 02:21 pm Link Kenia again I think it depends on the area your in. I am in the midwest and I charge $140.00 for the bride (includes trial run which I insist on doing) and $45.00 for each additional person. Mar 23 07 03:22 pm Link $185 including trial run for bride, (trial run separate $60) $65 for each additional person. I live in a metropolitan/affluent area so people will pay that much. It really depends on your market. Mar 23 07 03:25 pm Link Kenia, you're in my market. The rates quoted above are low for our area. I charge separately for the trial run and for the wedding day. Anywhere from $150-200 for the trial. It's an agonizing process and shouldn't be done for free or as part of a package. Once they understand that they have to pay to be made up, no matter what, they know you are a business person and should be treated with respect for your talent...besides, they usually go out that night all made up, so get paid for your work! Then between $250-300 for the wedding day is average (not even high). I know artists who charge even more than that and are very busy. So don't undercut or sell yourself short. Charlotte Bentley wrote: Charlotte, you are completely underpriced for your area. I have done bridal in Manhattan and have friends who do it all the time. The lowest rate I've ever gotten was $400 for the trial and wedding day combined (and I don't even live there full time yet). Mar 23 07 03:42 pm Link Thanks for the heads up Girls- I truly appreciate it... julie your rate seemed to be a little over the top for me as I probably would have charged up to $80 for the Trial and $150 for the wedding day...But you're absolutely right, It all depends on your market. Thank you! Oh and should I ask for a deposit in advance or make any contracts? Im so new to this whole Bridal business, I know within time it will turn out well.. Mar 23 07 04:24 pm Link There are some great threads in the Stylist FAQ as well at the very top of the Stylist Forum! Great good luck to you. Mar 23 07 05:29 pm Link juliemcmua wrote: See, I've only done 2 weddings in Manhattan, most in the area surrounding (upper New Jersey) and although it is a wealthy area, Manhattan and New Jersey have different expectations for price. I'm going to raise my rates though for the next price quotes I need to give ($210 for bride, $75 trial run, $90 each other person). Thank you for the input. I always worry if I'm underselling myself. Mar 23 07 08:37 pm Link Search the FAQ for bridal info. I always ask for 1/3 deposit up front if it's a LARGE wedding party to do...not with the bride unless they insist. I have a 1/3 rule. 1/3 up front on wedding parties, 1/3 for preconsultation, and 1/3 CASH or money order the day of the wedding before the makeup begins. I also have a 45 day cancellation policy or they lose the 1/3 up front fee. Last minute cancellations by brides have made me rethink losing my day fee, so that saves me. Also, I have them initial my custom contracts on each paragraph. You need them to understand each thing clearly. Good luck! Kenia Mishelle wrote: Mar 23 07 10:19 pm Link Lynn, how far are you from Detroit/AA? You could probably charge more. I started lower than I am now a year ago, as it takes word of mouth and I do advertise as well. About Faces-Lynn wrote: Mar 23 07 10:22 pm Link Hi! I'm in NC and I do make-up and hair. My consultation is $85...for up to an hour and a half. BUT if the bride signs the contract with me, I waive the consult fee. It gives me a leg up on the competition and a consultation/trial run is a major benefit for me because I like to know what I am getting myself into on a wedding day. As for my wedding day rates...My base package is $250 for the bride and one other person...make-up and hair. Each additional person is $80 for full service. BUT if they want ONLY make-up or ONLY hair, I charge $45. I also have an hourly rate once the initial application is done, in the event that they want me to touch them up after the ceremony, etc. And last but not least, I get 50% at the time the contract is signed and the other 50% is due at no later than 10 days before the wedding. I do NOT deal with money on wedding days. It's too hectic and I've gotten the shaft too many times. Hope that helps. Mar 23 07 10:26 pm Link I paid for my girlfriend's neice to get her makeup done and paid $75 for consult and $150 for wedding day, and I paid for my own make on the wedding day and paid $75. The lady charged me less than she usually does, since I always send her business from my nail clients. She is in the suburbs of Chicago. Mar 25 07 10:06 pm Link So let me ask this: what are the standard rates in Los Angeles and Orange County? Anyone who works bridal in these areas? Mar 25 07 10:17 pm Link i live in a small rinky dink town and they would rather pay $25 at a salon (i know salons can have good MUA's after all i've worked at a few and the girls are good but out here, OH MY! the MUA's have 2 weeks of makeup lessons at their cosmetology school and *POOF* professional MUA!) or go to a counter. I just spoke with one of the gals at the benefit counter in the "BIG" city by me and she told me they didn't teach her any application just product info. So instead of choosing to pay my rediculously good small town price of $50 for the bride and $35 for each BM and MOH (including consultation yes i am crazy) they opt for the salon. Luckily i am contracted to one of the salons here but either way i'm getting RIPPED OFF! but hey what'ya gonna do, thank god seattle is only 3 hours away! i know this has no value to you and isn't helping with your prices, but i thought it might make a few people laugh! Mar 26 07 11:24 am Link Disregard my last post if you saw it. Justine Danielle Mar 26 07 07:25 pm Link 200$ for bride + 75 $ trial run and it's minimum Mar 27 07 12:27 am Link just FYO really. here in the UK the rate is pretty much whatever you want to charge at the moment (asian wedding im talking about). there are alot of 'oh lets do makeup' kinda of girls out here and charge £250 for hair and makeup.... trials are usually seperate. my rate is £190 for hair and makeup (& dressing). trials are £30 at my place (am not travelling out for trials anymore), its a seperate charge to cover my time and product use during that trial. i do however hold a full dress rehearsel about 1 month before the wedding if the brides wants to as they've got their bits and pieces together and want to know the exact look. when it comes to makeup and hair, asian weddings just dont compare to 'white' weddings. one of the reasons why i don't do 'white' weddings is because i find there is no challange... don'get me wrong, but i just don't get a thrill in doing the whole 'no-make-up' make-up look all the time... give me asian drama any day! Mar 27 07 08:13 am Link Anyone could please give me an idea about bridal rates in Southern California? Apr 05 07 10:55 pm Link Why can you just not google makeup artists in your area? Apr 05 07 11:44 pm Link I work in san diego and orange county and i charge $50 for trial run and $75 for the bride $40 for each additional person. Apr 05 07 11:58 pm Link I only offer makeup to the bridal party...I rarely do hair for brides, as it's not my thing or forte. I get 100.00 for consultation only...and if they book consultation AND wedding day it's 180.00...just for makeup...in Nashville. Go figure your rates...and remember, charge what you are worth. People that undercut your rates and shop you are NEVER happy. Bridesmaids $65-75 depending on size of party. It truly depends on your market and talent. Weddings/Brides can be interesting. Remember when deciding on your price to account for the following: Your Product Your time Your creative talent Gas - travel/parking Your experience Apr 12 07 01:22 pm Link I have two different costs for my regular makeup application and airbrush makeup application, I was wondering if this would mean I have two different day rates as such because of this or I find a in between of the two prices to adjust accordingly? Should I really have separate costs, probabaly not seeing that makeup either way costs the same right? I should probably have on common hourly rate as well as per face and bridal Mar 02 08 09:48 am Link Like the other rate thread, I think it really depends on what "market within a market" you're trying to tap. There are different tiers and budgets within even "wealthy" communities. I believe that some makeup artists can get away charging $400 for a bride in Manhattan, but I don't have an "in" with that level of client and honestly, I don't know how one goes about finding them. (Maybe I just don't travel in those circles?) Now the $125-including-trial brides, I know right where to find them. Mar 02 08 09:46 pm Link Katrianna wrote: Not sure if this answers your question exactly but: for a bridal client specifically requesting airbrush, I would charge a different rate than regularly applied makeup. But for a regular job (half/dayrate) where I get to make the creative decision of whether or not use an airbrush, I would not charge differently either way... my rate is my rate and I will do whatever the job requires with whatever tools I think best. Mar 02 08 09:50 pm Link Cynthia ORourke wrote: Thanks, right I was wondering if cause you have a different airbrush rate to regular makeup rate if you would do the same with hourly and day rate.. Mar 03 08 07:34 am Link Umm... I guess what I'm trying to say is, if I'm working with a private client and the client (the bride) is requesting airbrush I would charge more... whether they're paying hourly or just per application. But if I were working on a tv show for my dayrate and I decided to use airbrush (or it's in HD and airbrush is the best medium to use) than I personally would not try to charge more... and honestly I don't think the production company would be willing to pay more for that. Mar 03 08 09:25 am Link Can I share a funny? I had a consult meeting with a bride today. I went to High School with her but hadn't seen her in the 16 years following, so I treated her as any other client with my regular rates. Here are some questions I got from her: So, what are you doing for work these days? (After telling her I was a full time makeup artist) Do you have a lot of time off? (After balking at my rates) Tell me about the famous people you've worked with. I don't expect her to be booking. I quoted her $125 for wedding day, $75 for 2 hour trial, and $50 per attendant. That's right in line with what my peers are charging. However, the salon that I used to work at in her town had me doing makeup at 17.50 a face, so there's a large variation in prices.
