I prefer a proper portion of good old British chip-shop chips, personally! French "fries" are all too thin and spindly.... big_smile

Pfffft.  I'm a bit of a health nut too, but I will throw a fit if I'm not allowed to eat fries once in a while.

Who counts calories anyway?  I barely pay attention to that nonsense and I'm still fit. tongue

For me too many chip shops are too greasy, not that I have them that often. The ones I had at Alton Towers on Monday night were definitely good ( not as good as my winning the photography competition that was being judged ). The most consistently good ones I've found, over a period of 4 decades have been from the chippy at the western end of the seafront at Swanage.

A french frie served in anything but a brown paper bag with a liner bag is bleh, phoohey (gag). The thinner, eat 'em hot out of the oil. The steak fries, now we're talking- done to perfection hold a little heat and can stand up to meal.

Cut a potato into eights (1/8) pieces. Fire up your hardwood charcoal grille. Sprinkle some Harley's BBQ rub on the taters, add some mesquite and applewood smoke to the grille and you have non-fried wonderful. Dip in everything you can imagine- butter, sour cream, guacomole, dressings (mmmm french with crushed red pepper), toss with butter and parsley leaves...

Like I said, a french frie in anything other than a greasy bag- bleh.

Chip wagon fries, cooked in lard, are the best.

the whole point of a fry is the grease.  that makes the potato edible.  who eats more than a single plain baked potato? no one.
cut it up into fries and you can eat 2 or 3 smile
