So. Has anyone ever ordered a fancy custom cake before? I want to get a small (meant for approx. 6-10 people) but very classy birthday cake that incorporates a black Mustang without it looking like a child's cake for my bf's birthday.

The point being it's in two weeks and I have no idea how far in advance you can order such cakes!

Anyone know?

This place is the place I wanna go!

http://nadinesvariety.blogspot.com/

Yelp speaks so amazingly highly of it too. I'm excited. This is what he gets for asking for a modest birthday gift tongue

I'm hoping such a small cake can be done with a week and a half's notice but if you're experience says differently share! Must know!

Shit those are some fancy cakes!

We get our cakes at the grocery store and, frankly, they're not half bad!  But then again, Spiderman and Barbie are a long way from a classy black Mustang wink

I spent so muh time lookin through the cakes I couldn't bear not to go all out!!!

A yelp review said for a epic custom cake that fed 25 it was like 41 dollars. Not bad I'd expect a tad less for a smaller one at least.

I can't wait to call!!!

We always get the cupcake version, which are made up of a base of about 36 cupcakes held together with frosting and then iced as one big piece. Epic for parties because you just pull a cupcake off and nom smile

I think two weeks should be enough time. Especially if it's a small cake. But it usually depends on their rules and how busy they are I would imagine.

If nothing else you could always make your own cake and stencil. smile

Normally I'd consider that but don't those come with a lot of cupcakes? I really can't justify more than like 12 max lol

Keep in mind it's wedding season still, I didn't check the link but if it's a bakery that does wedding cakes and they are popular they might have booked up months in advance.

Contact them ASAP to find out!

it's only 2:35 where I am. I'm calling at 3 after my bf leaves for work.

I'm afraid I might sound insane by then though- I'm working from home today and I'm on hour 9 of 12 of editing a 500 page document.

@_@ they could probably quote me something ridiculous and I'd agree at this point. This worries me lol

Buh.

A custom eight inch red velvet cake with a scanned image and writing is gunna run me 45 dollars. Normally I'd balk at this as atrocious but the reviews for this place are just so phenomenal- I'm going to give them the benefit of the doubt and trust tht it's worth the cost.

Plus gifts.

But I love going all out for people sooo much. Can't not do it.

Though she told me to call back in a week to officially order it so I can email them the exact image- their email is down now.

Hate waiting! *flail*

^That is quite awesome.

I don't really see why cakes are heavily decorated, however.

A Mustang cake sounds nice. smile

Some of the cakes seem just too busy. I'm hoping they can do something really elegant, mature and not over the top...despite needing to involve a Mustang- I'll be sure to mention he's 27 and not 7 hahah.

It helps that I'll snag a picture of his very car for the cake- I can't even find one as nice online as the ones he has of his own!

Personally I would be at al loss to incorporate a Mustang on a cake while making it look adult and fancy.

I'll make sure I get my money's worth though by insisting on it (politely).

We have a fancy pastry chef like that in our local grocery store.
Because the suburb I live in is ridiculous.
But, it is pretty awesome to be able to get fancy pastries and cakes just at the local Kroger while also getting the rest of our groceries.

He did a Thor Hammer cake once that was freaking awesome.

I debated just going to grocery store route- but I read that this is one of the only places in the city that can do scanning of an image- and I'd rather have that than an icing drawn mustang so it can be HIS car.

We were still pretty new as a relationship during xmas so this is the first time I'm really going all out since we're nearing a year mark big_smile

O.O 45 does seem a bit expensive for just a scan! Perhaps it's just me though...

I hope everything works! smile

Well I'm expecting some writing and decoration on top of that yikes

I'm counting on their examples but i'll be clear about what i want just in case. I trust them to design it, I'll just add the bit about some basic decoration to round out the cake.

I'm unmarried- if they impress me, maybe someday I'll choose them for a wedding cake.

After saving up for a year to afford one lol

Good cake from a quality baker is totally worth the money! My wedding cake was a simple cake, cost just under $300 but was so. fucking. delicious. Much better than any home made or grocery store cake.

This is so what I want to hear. I've always been very impressed by high end bakery products. On holidays and my birthday my dad used to order cakes from very nice bakeries in Boston and I always looked forward to them immensely. They made a lasting impression even when I was young. I'm hoping for that with this cake.

And even more importantly- the bf has a massive sweet tooth so i know he'll appreciate a good cake.

Shit, $45 is quite reasonable for a cake of that magnitude.

My son's Spider-Man cupcake cake set us back $35, but it came with a toy wink

I will have to dig up this thread in two weeks when it exists and I can take pictures. I'm shocked at how many replies it got!

I hope I remember to! lol
